Akela
Akela, also called the Lone Wolf or the Big Wolf is the leader of the Seeonee pack of wolves in the Jungle Book. Akela presides over the pack council meetings. In one of these meetings, it is decided that he pack adopt a lost child called Mowgli. Akela becomes one of Mowgli's mentors. In Hindu, Akela means lonely or solitary. Akela is large and grey, he leads the pack with his strength and his skills. He thinks that honour is very important, especially the honour of the pack.
In the Scouting organisation, the leader of a cub pack is called Akela.
Shere Khan tries to get rid of Akela, as he thinks he is too old to be able to protect Mowgli, which means Shere Khan can then eat him. Akela is set up to fail a hunt by Shere Khan and this then means that Akela should be forced away from his pack and no longer be the pack leader. However, Mowgli defends Akela at pack council and uses fire to scare away Shere Khan and his followers.
Akela refuses to be pack leader any more, despite all the wolves asking him to stay. He leaves and hunts alone. Mowgli goes to a human village but they stay in contact. Akela helps Mowgli kill Shere Khan with help from the village's water buffalo herd. A number of years later, Mowgli comes back to help fight off a pack of dhole who are trying to kill all of them. Akela dies in this fight, Mowgli is very sad. Mowgli then decides to go back to the human village.
